GSA Feminist Society Presents: Tomboy

Tonight, Glasgow School of Art presents a one off night full of female rap, trap and grime as a fundraiser for Sisters Uncut.

With an appearance from Lady Shocker, a grime rapper from East London, Tomboy looks set to be an insanely cool night for only £5 entry.

Also taking to the stage is Sycophantasy, a.k.a Catriona Reilly, one half of Glasgow’s wildly popular woman-centric club night Push It. I spoke to Cat about Tomboy and why rap is emerging as such an empowering genre for women: “They’re obviously very lyrical so allow more space for expression physically but they’re also very male and male dominated genres, so for a woman to make waves in that territory is important.”

It’s important to note that tonight 100% of profits are going to Sisters Uncut, the action group looking for improved support to women suffering domestic abuse. Catriona says it was an obvious choice to help support the group: “Me and Mara are and were both involved with it and they do great work. They’re such an important lifeline for women, especially those seeking asylum.”

Sisters Uncut have been heavily in the media this week after blocking bridges around the UK in protest against domestic violence service cuts. The group are demanding “a strategic plan for ALL domestic violence survivors, regardless of immigration status, that supports black and brown, disabled and LGBT+ survivors.” In an excessively scary and intolerant world, it’s absolutely vital that we women take care of each other. So why not help a cause by dancing all night?

It might be two days until pay day but why not spend your last fiver on something worthy and hang out with the coolest girls in Glasgow right now?

Get listening to some songs that’ll definitely be played tonight now in preparation – chosen by Sycophantasy, so you know it’s good.
